Message	But when welding that thick of material, you have to bevel the two pieces and fill in the void with weld. So that you have 100% penetration through out the piece. As for the two hard spots. Hardness and brittle are two different terms. Take a hammer, Its hard but not brittle. Other wise it would shatter under shock. It all really relies on how much carbon is in the steel. High carbon content=brittle.
